Books I Like: Hello from the Gillespies

my favorite lines from this book...

if your mother tells you that she doesn't have a favourite child, then you're not her favourite child

make the best of things. onwards and upwards, and all that.

marriages go through stages

don't fear being talked about behind your backs. step out in front of their backs

Marriage is a one-way street, love. Imagine you are two cars in a narrow alley, bonnet to bonnet. One can’t move any further without the other moving too. If neither of you move, you’re both stuck there forever. But if one of you does move – and it doesn’t matter which one does – voilĂ , the road is cleared and you can get back to business. Just don’t keep count of who said sorry first. Don’t get into the habit of saying, “But he never does this” or “He never does that”. As long as one of you is making a move, that’s all you need to get started.

Change the radio station. Don’t listen to the bad thoughts.

Was that just what life was like when you were a mother? You were so busy with your children you didn’t have time for your children?

‘Let yourself be sad about it. Grieve all you need to.’

I want you to come with me because my life is always better when you’re around
