Downton Abbey Season 6

pic from Downton Abbey IG page

I will definitely miss Downton. my favorite lines...

a problem shared is a problem halved

does it ever get cold in the moral high ground?

sometimes it's good to rule by fear

you're married and that means you never have to cry alone again

that's the danger of being alone,  it can be very hard to give up

we made a plan,  but we forgot about emotion,  and emotion's what can trip you everytime

in my experience, second thoughts are vastly overrated

all that's needed for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing

edith: i suppose cousin Isobel is entitled to put up an argument
violet: of course she is, she's just not entitled to win it

a monkey will type out the Bible if you leave it long enough

and there's no such thing as safe love. real love means giving someone the power to hurt you

not everyone's right for what they're born to

when we unleash the dog of war, we must go where they take us

I'm afraid it must get worse before it gets better

show me a man that doesn't smile when his wife admits she's wrong

don't demean yourself by trying to justify your venom

a couple should be equal in both strength and passion

our shared memories will mean more than our mutual dislike

my late father used to say if reason fails, try force

there's a lot of risk, but with any luck, they'd be happy enough which is the English version of the happy ending

.... I will so miss this show, which I consider as of the best. And as much as I don't want or wish it to ever end, yes, some good things never last. I need to watch it all over again....

Downton Abbey Quotes

There's nothing simpler than avoiding people you don't like. Avoiding one's friends-that's the real test.

If I weaken, I'll pay for it.

Jimmy: We all settle down one day.
Thomas: We don't all have the option.

The nature of life is not permanence but flux.

It's good to have more than one string to your bow.

But it's time he decided whether he is fish, flesh, fowl or good red herring.

Marriage is a lottery, as we are often told, but I am a man who has drawn a winning ticket. I have been awarded a bumper prize: beauty, brains, a heart, a conscience, all in one.

Principles are like prayers. Noble, of course, but awkward at a party.

Sympathy butters no parsnips.

My advice Daisy is to go as far in life as God and luck allow.

If I was seduced by a man, I would not let any grass grow under his feet.

An unlucky friend is tiresome enough and an unlucky acquaintance is intolerable.

You're allowed to be crossed you're not allowed to be unjust.

Hope is a tease, designed to prevent us accepting reality.

It will be very hard for you, my darling, but I promise it's better to know the truth than to live in a cloud of mystery and despair.

I was never the type to die of a broken heart, you know.

Violet: I never take sides in a broken marriage.
Shrimpie: Why is that?
Violet: Because, however much the couple may strive to be honest, no one is ever in possession of the facts.

I won't take sides-it's true. But I don't think I could ever be described as "neutral".

I never knew anyone who could provoke me into saying so many things I don't believe.

I accept change but I want to navigate it gently.

It's my kind of beer, and I know how to drink it.

Because he still won't accept I know my own mind.

Accept the burden that chance has seen fit to lay upon you. And to fashion as good a life as you are able.

Remember, harsh reality is always better than false hope.

All this endless thinking. It's very overrated.

My dear, a lack of compassion can be as vulgar as an excess of tears.

I think it takes some people longer than others.

He's as touchy as a beauty losing her looks.

I like it when good things come from bad.

Love may not conquer all, but it can conquer quite a lot.

My dear, love is a far more dangerous motive than dislike.

But who has a life where everything is easy?

We must always travel in hope.

Books I Recommend: The World of Downton Abbey

If you're a big fan of the show like me, you have to read this book too. it will again transport you to that Edwardian era where it all began. there are many things written here (that weren't explained in details in the show) that gave light to some questions we might have posed.

these are the things i learned in the book...

i learned what Easter rising is, why Branson was so upset, angered by the killings of his people by her people.

i learned how the likes of O'brien was chosen to be a lady's maid.

i learned the sad plight of the soldiers after the end of the war.

i learned what white feather was really all about, how volunteering to join the war came first to it becoming a law next.

i learned how and why rich American girls like Cora came to be as Buccaneers

i learned that when a woman's hair is up, it means she's ready for marriage

i learned why it's important for women to get presented at court during that time

i learned how life was (around 1820s) when there was no bell yet (and it was unbelievable)

i learned how it all began for women to have the right to vote

i learned that there's a book that lists all the noble families in Britain called "Peerage"

the book gave a glimpse of the show's behind the scenes too:

they shoot the show from two places, one in Highclere castle, the other one in ealing studios so the continuity of the show was kind of tricky but as we saw it, it came out impeccable.

dan stevens shared that on a full day they start shooting from morning (he is to be picked up at 5:30am) until 7pm (when he's driven home).

maggie smith has her own wig maker who does hers for the show, she was also described by zoe boyle as a funny woman.

all women in the show wear corset

lesley nicol as mrs patmore was the only one who doesn't need to wear make up in the show

lady mary's and anna's character are of the same age

>>> Downton Abbey made this era really interesting, can't wait for the 5th season.

More Downton Abbey quotes...

It's the job of the grandmothers to interfere.

We shout and scream and wail and cry but in the end we must all die.

There can't be too much truth in any relationship.

We must all have our hearts broken once or twice before we're down.

Nothing's as changeable as a young man's heart.

Home's the place I love the best.

I wanted it so much I could taste it.

Sometimes you can't spend too long on a one-sided love.

The business of life is the acquisition of memories.

There is no such thing as a marriage between two intelligent people that does not sometimes have to negotiate thin ice.

The damage cannot be irreparable when a man and woman love each other as much as you do.

The world moves on and we must move with it.

You know I wonder your halo doesn't grow heavy. It must be like wearing a tiara round the clock.

Isobel: How you hate to be wrong
Violet: I wouldn't know. I'm not familiar with the sensation.

To be young is to have your heart broken.

Life kicks the stuffing out of you sometimes.

No life appears rewarding if you think too much about it.

Marriage is a challenge even when everyone wants it. Even if everyone prays you'll be happy.

If you're going to complicate your life, do it for the right reasons.

My dear, all life is a series of problems which we must try and solve, First one, then the next, and the next...until at last we die.

Downton Abbey

I'm so obsessed with Downton Abbey, my favorite show to date. These quotable quotes are either a favorite of mine or it simply struck a chord in me.

Every mountain is unclimbable until someone climbs it, so every ship is unsinkable until it sinks.

If you're feeling homesick, there's no shame in it. It means you come from a happy home.

We all have chapters we would rather keep unpublished.

There are plenty more fish the sea than ever came out of it.

We all carry scars, inside or out.

Life's altered you as it's altered me.

What would be the point of living if we didn't let life change us.

What the eye can't see, the heart won't grieve over.

I hate Greek drama. You know, when everything happens off stage.

We'd rather know the worst than wonder.

There's room for sentiment but not for sentimentality.

A broken heart can be as painful as a broken limb.

But even I will concede that the heart does not exist solely for the purpose of pumping blood.

I think you regret being honest less often than you regret telling lies.

It's doing nothing that's the enemy.

I'm a woman, Mary, I can be as contrary as I choose.

It was always a question of when.

I'd rather have the right man than the right wedding.

See, sometimes we must let the blow fall by degrees.

Never leave anything to chance.

Sometimes fate knows best.

Don't be defeatist, dear, it's very middle class.

I have no right to be unhappy.

Life is a game in which the player must appear ridiculous.

Never make an enemy by accident.

Much cattle much care.

Good men are not like buses, there won't be another one along in ten minutes' time.

I'm so happy, so very happy, I feel my chest will explode.

Nothing succeeds like excess.

If you are tired of style, you are tired of life.

Never is a long time.

Anxiety is an enemy to pregnancy.

When tragedies strike, we try to find someone to blame. In the absence of a suitable candidate, we usually blame ourselves.

Grief makes one so terribly tired.

Human nature's a funny business, isn't it?

Be your own master and call your own tune.

Love is like riding or speaking French. If you don't learn it young, it's hard to get the trick of it later.

It's funny. I feel as if I'm only half myself without him.

I wonder if he has any idea how much joy he brings with him.
