Ronin means masterless samurai. This is a fictional account of the 47 ronin who avenged the death of their Lord in 18th century Japan.
I've read that the filming was first done in Japanese for the supporting cast's sake and then done in English. The film saw lots of script changes during the filming and even during post-prod. And that Keanu was first hesitant for the role of Kai as he was worried the character wouldn't be integrated into the story.
I remember that before watching it, I've read not-so-good reviews about the movie which I must admit kind of influenced me as to whether to continue to see it. Hubby wanted to see it anyways and so we did. Contrary to that review, I liked it actually (that's why it made to my list of the movies I recommended.) The Japanese actors were good, fit to a T. I missed Keanu here that I wish he makes more movies every year. I've seen the dynamics of how Japan were during the 18th century and their rich culture was not to be missed. The costumes were elaborate. I was in awe of the stunts that I guessed using a sword (real or not) was a difficult thing to play or act with. The effects were just as good. And although the story is just a fiction and an inspiration to what the 47 ronin's real story were, the message came across right on the spot, the heart. So to those who had not seen it when it was shown last year, let's wait for the blu-ray or dvd copy to come out soon, I'm dying to see the outtakes that would probably be included in it.
